You don't have to be in crisis to reach out. Whether you're facing thoughts of suicide, a mental health or substance use struggle, emotional distress, or you're worried about someone you love, a trained counselor is ready to listen — with no judgment and no cost.
What Is the 988 Lifeline?
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is the nationwide three-digit number that connects you directly to trained crisis counselors. It replaced the older ten-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in July 2022, making support easier to remember and reach. The Lifeline is a network of more than 200 local crisis centers backed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
When you call, text, or chat, your conversation is confidential and free. A counselor will listen, talk through what you're going through, and connect you with local resources for ongoing support. The vast majority of contacts are resolved over the phone — emergency services are involved only in the rare situation where someone's life is in immediate danger.
No matter what you're going through, you deserve to feel heard and cared about.
There is no problem too big or too small to reach out — and you are not alone.- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
